Our Favorite Door County Winter Activities
1. Ice Fishing
Lake Michigan, in the winter, is a frozen oasis. Ice fishing on frozen Lake Michigan is a prime way to chill out and relax on the lake. Once a survival necessity, ice fishing on Lake Michigan in the winter is now a favorite winter pastime. With changing ice conditions and the travel of fish throughout the season, the fishing locations can include Sturgeon Bay, Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, and Sister Bay. If you’re new to the sport, consider taking a guided ice fishing trip, that will supply you with safe transportation to proven fish catching locations, quality equipment, and heated ice houses to help you stay warm.
2. Cross-Country Skiing
Door County boasts nearly 50 miles of trails to explore in its state parks, such as Peninsula State Park. Most of these trails offer some of the most stunning views in the Midwest. Cross-country skiing is also a favorite activity for many winter visitors, and we’re sure you’ll love it as well! Whether you are a beginner or an experienced skier, you will find a trail that is perfect for your skill level. If you need ski equipment, you will be able to rent from Bay Shore Outfitters or Nor Door Sports.
3. Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is one of the most popular winter activities in the area that explores the beauty of Door County’s great outdoors. It is also one of the most leisurely excursions to do after heavy snowfall. Many of the parks contain snowshoeing trails, including conserved properties such as Crossroads at Big Creek and the Door County Land Trust. Ridges Sanctuary is also known to host guided snowshoe hikes during the winter, giving you the perfect opportunity to experience parts of the ecosystem you can only find in the sanctuary.
4. Visit a Tasting Room
On a cold winter day, warm up your tummy with sips of local beer, wine, and cider at a tasting room. There is an array of popular Door County breweries, such as Starboard Brewing Company, Shipwrecked Brewery, and Door County Brewery. If you prefer to sip on a crisp cider, try a drink from Island Orchard Cider. As Door County quickly grows into one of the most respected wine regions in the nation, there’s plenty of wineries and vineyards for you to choose from. Some of our favorites are Harbor Ridge Winery, Stone’s Throw Winery, and Door Peninsula Winery.
5. Walks on the Beach
While beaches are primarily a summer destination, Door County beaches are just as magical during the winter season. The glittering ice stacks, light blankets of snow, and dunes waving in the chill breeze are just some of the sights to see. You may also spot local wildlife such as hawks and flocks of turkeys. It’s a great way to enjoy a romantic stroll in an uncrowded environment. Choose from picturesque beaches like Egg Harbor Beach, Whitefish Dunes Beach, Newport Beach, and more!
