Explore These 5 Hidden Gems of Door County

1. Washington Island

Washington Island is unlike any other town in Door County because you can’t get there by driving down the road. This island is only accessible by the Washington Island Ferry Boat, a picturesque and relaxing adventure in itself. Once you get to Washington Island, spend the day at Schoolhouse Beach. This beach is truly a gem and is one of only five of its kind in the world. The shore is covered in millions of small smooth stones, and the water is crystal-clear.

2. Whitefish Dunes State Natural Area

Settled alongside Lake Michigan, you’ll find the Whitefish Dunes State Natural Area. This area is geographically unique, with the largest sand dunes on the western side of the lake. Explore the area by hiking along trails, some taking you to the sandy shore, some taking you to cliffs overlooking the water, and taking you back into the woods and across to Clark Lake.

3. Door County Maritime Museum

Door County is rich in fascinating maritime history. For years, ships have traveled in and out of Green Bay and through the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal. Head to the Door County Maritime Museum and go back in time. One of the most exciting exhibits at the museum is the historic tugboat, John Purves, which is over 100 years old.

4. Gills Rock

Gills Rock is a historic fishing village in Door County that’s filled with charm and fun-filled activities. One of the best things to do here is enjoying waterfront dining at a superb local restaurant, such as Shoreline Restaurant. You can also snap a photo at one of the most photographed sites in Wisconsin, the “winding road,” go kayaking on Europe Lake, or hike to scenic overlooks in the Ellison Bay Bluff State Natural Area.

5. Cave Point County Park

Cave Point isn’t your average county park. This natural gem features limestone cliffs and underwater caves created by the wind and waves of Lake Michigan over time. Hike to the top of the hills in Cave Point County Park and listen to the thunderous sound of waves crashing along the shore. Sometimes the waves are so powerful the spray shoots up 20 feet into the air!
